A record breaking car jump!

Here’s another bit – a California man takes a record breaking car jump. Travis Pastrana apparently took a 250-foot flying leap off Long Beach Pier, over open water, and landed on a floating barge in the harbor. It’s the longest jump ever in a car, shattering the previous world record of 171 feet. WOW!

NYTimes’ Top 5 Web Trends of 2009

One such trend is so called Structured Data, or Web of Data (as opposed to hyperlinked web of documents), touted as Web 3.0.

However over the past few years, we’ve seen that there are many other ways to structure data and enable others to build off it. The best current example is surely Twitter, whose API has historically been responsible for around 90% of Twitter’s activity – via third party apps. If Web 2.0 was about creating data (a.k.a. user generated content), then the next generation of the Web is all about using that data.

So, welcome to Web 3.0 when web site host web services dishing out data via structured APIs (as opposed to web pages).

Update (09/10): wonder what’s it’s like to scale sites such as Twitter built on APIs. The following quote is rater intriguing:

Particularly when you’re talking about a new global scale communications service that is bottlenecked at a single centralized website with an iffy API. It’s not inconceivable that Twitter actually can’t scale as a centralized service, and will stumble badly.

2.6 Million Miles – an automative world record?

When my Infinity G20′s odometer read 100K miles, I wondered what’s next milestone. When one of my friends said he had a few cars in his garage with an average odometer reading of 220K, I was surprised but not shocked (my friend maintains his own cars). But when I read the story (in San Jose Mercury News recently) of a gentleman who put 2.6M miles on his 1966 Volvo P1800 – world record of sorts – and still going places, it was some thing.

“When he hit the 2.6 million-mile mark, … he has driven his car the equivalent of 104 times around the world at the equator, six round trips to the moon and 1,172,228 completions of the Tour de France.”
